Checklist: Fire Protection and Prevention

This checklist, courtesy of the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, can be used in conjunction with 29 CFR 1910 to test your compliance with the general industry standard for fire protection and prevention.

Note that this checklist is only a guide; compliance with it does not necessarily assure full compliance with all OSHA standards, nor is it a substitute for a comprehensive health and safety program.

1. Have procedures been established for sounding emergency alarms in the workplace?

2. Are portable fire extinguishers provided, mounted, located and identified so that they are readily accessible to employees?
1910.157(c)(1)

3. Are fire extinguishers selected and distributed based on the classes of anticipated fires and the size and degree of hazard?
1910.157(d)(1)

4. Where portable fire extinguishers are provided for employee use, is there an educational training program to familiarize employees with principles of use and hazards involved with incipient-stage firefighting?
1910.157(g)(1)

5. Are portable fire extinguishers hydrostatically tested as required?
1910.157(f)(2)

6. Are portable fire extinguishers visually inspected each month?
1910.157(d)(2)

7. Are annual maintenance checks of portable fire extinguishers completed and records maintained of the date completed?

8. If a fire brigade exists, has the employer prepared and maintained an organizational statement establishing the fire brigade?

9. Are employees who are expected to do interior structural firefighting physically capable of performing those duties?

10. Are only pressure-demand or other positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus worn by fire brigade members performing interior structural firefighting?

11. When portable fire extinguishers are removed from service for maintenance or recharging, is alternate equivalent protection provided?

12. Are fixed extinguishing systems inspected annually to ensure the system is maintained in good operating condition?
