Scope of Required DOT Training

Companies who offer/transport hazardous materials must ensure that all of their hazmat employees are trained properly (according to 49 CFR 172.700-704 http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=e4454683f0da043c58be2371283f1e49&rgn=div6&view=text&node=49:2.1.1.3.7.8&idno=49)

Training is required for all hazmat employees who perform functions that are subject to the requirements of the hazardous material regulations. In other words, any employees that load or unload hazardous materials, fill out or sign shipping papers, select containers, close containers for shipment, mark or label containers, or otherwise perform any function that can impact the safety of hazardous material shipment, must be trained.

Initial training is required within 90 days of performing the hazmat function & recurrent training is required every 3 years. Hazmat employee training must include:
* General awareness/familiarization training
* Function-specific training
* Safety training
* Security awareness training
* In-depth security training(for individuals that are required to have a hazardous material security plan)
