Department of Transportation regulations require that emergency contact information be included on all hazardous material shipping papers including waste manifests as well as virgin materials. A summary of the requirements and directions to review the regulations are provided below.

What written emergency information is required with hazardous materials shipments?

The emergency response information that the DOT requires with hazardous materials shipping papers is outlined in 49 CFR 172 Subpart G. The written information must include:
-basic description (proper shipping name, hazard class, identification number, packing group) and technical names of the material
-immediate hazards to health
-risks of fire or explosion
-immediate precautions to be taken in the event of an accident or incident
-immediate methods for handling fires
-initial methods for handling spills or leaks
-preliminary first aid measures

In addition to the written information, an emergency response telephone number must be provided on the shipping paper. To comply with the regulations, the written emergency response information and telephone number must be provided with each shipment of hazardous materials, unless excepted.
