Gary: I agree with the previous responses posted to the list on the subject. Most printers are not large sources of NOx or PM emissions. NOx emissions are a byproduct of fuel combustion and these include, dryers, heaters, boilers, backup generators, and add-on control devices. Since these fuel combustion sources are not unique to printing, most of the available P2 approaches for these types of sources should be applicable. For the larger heatset printers, the trend in add-on controls has been towards using regenerative thermal oxidizers, which reduce NOx emissions. Catalytic units also have lower NOx emissions as well. For particulate matter, there are three sources. The most common one is dust from trimming, cutting, perfect binding, and other binding operations. Larger printers use centralized paper collection systems with vacuums created by cyclones or fans, and bailers. Some printers also use baghouses in conjunction with the paper collection system. Perfect binders are usually equipped with baghouses. I am not aware of any P2 solutions for these activities. The other main source of PM is spray power from sheetfed presses. GATF has a publication on tips and suggestions to reduce spray powder. Another way to reduce spray powder is through overprint coatings. The last source, which is not all that common, is uncontrolled emissions from heatset web offset presses. If the ink coverage is heavy enough, the oil released from the dryers can condense to form "smoke". If the opacity of the "smoke" exceeds the local or state regulations, the printer will have to use an add-on control device to control the releases. They may be able to use a lower VOC containing ink, but there are formulation limits on this approach. The ink must contain a sufficient amount of ink oil so that it can actually be printed.
