Recently, there has been quite a discussion on ozone emissions in printing
operations, but some basic considerations have not been examined.
There are two possible sources of ozone in such operations. Operation of UV
lamps in UV cured inks and coatings can generate relatively small amounts of
ozone. This is generally not a problem because properly designed UV lamp units
not only protect the operators from UV light itself, they also provide for
removal of any ozone generated with a vacuum or air flow to the stacks.
The second source might be corona discharge if used to activate the surface to
be printed or coated. Such units emit larger amounts of UV than do the UV
lamps. However, the hazard from this source can also be eliminated by proper
air flow control..
The dead give-away on the operation described, however, is in the use of
rubber plates. Rubber is known to be very susceptible to ozone degradation.
Anyone using UV lamps or corona discharge should be using ozone resistant
(polymer) printing plates.
