Doreen,

"Chemistry for the Graphic Arts", GATF, 1992, lists fumed silica as an
extender for white pigments in printing inks (p 231).

Another seemingly improbable but possible source could be dust from a
wheel used for grinding or polishing (e.g., equipment repair?).
