SGIA has been working with the U.S. Forest Service to determine the viability of a wood pallet collection and recycling program. There are companies in almost every urban area that recycle wood pallets and either sell them or turn them into different products used by various industries.

The Forest Service informed us of a small little market serviced by "pickers" who go company to company picking up unwanted pallets until they fill a truckload. These companies will pay by the truckload, much like the theory behind tin can recycling, but they are sometimes leery of accepting the truckloads if they cannot trust that the picker has not stolen the pallets. Unfortunately, at this point SGIA has not had enough interest from small printers in the selected target regions to warrant the time and effort that would be required to try and set up this type of collection program.

You can search your region for recycling companies through the National Wood Pallet Association's Web site at: http://www.nwpca.com/SearchNew/ZipSearch.asp
