We generally found it to be very difficult and ineffective to enforce the safety glasses requirement on a "per task" basis - it is virtually impossible to control people walking in and out of areas where projectile hazards exist based on another employees work activities. The only instance I can recall in which we did this was in a lab environment where there was a desk area separated by a partition - when in the desk area it was not required to wear safety glasses.
We did not issue individual face shields except for special jobs where the primary/sole function required a face shield like welding, acid plant workers, etc.. Where they were shared we provided alcohol disinfectant wipes. There are probably better products for this purpose today.
