I am forwarding this question from the P2TECH listserver:

Is mercury present in any printing inks or other printing materials either as an intentional ingredient or as a contaminant? If it's present as an ingredient what is its function? If it is present as a contaminant what ingredient does it tag along with?

I have looked in several printing reference books including The Printing Ink Manual. The only mention of mercury I could find was mercury vapor lamps. I also looked at a list of hazardous air pollutants we put together in the Printing Common Sense Initiative in which the HAP used/emitted by printers were highlighted. Mercury compounds were not highlighted on this list.

I will pass any PRINTECH responses on to P2TECH. Dave Salman
