A short list Linotype and other machines like mergenthaler were used to set type. They used a system were individual mats containing one letter were dropped down into a guide that used space bands to justify the type. This line of mats were sent up and over to a casting station on the machine. The line of type would be cast in metal that would come out of the machine next to the operator in a galley. When a column was finished it would be taken to the stone to be assembled into a page.

There are very few linotypes in use today.
