It has taken some time to research the answer to your question about automatic blanket washers. There were no historical review papers that could be found so I had to contact some of the original inventors of the technology.

Without having them do detailed research for specific dates, the answers to your question is that automatic blanket washer systems were first developed for sheetfed presses. There were some very early attempts in the 1950's, but it was not until the late 1960's or early 1970's before the units were perfected.

Automatic blanket wash units for sheetfed presses began appearing on presses in the 1974-1976 time frame. Automatic blanket wash units for nonheatset web presses became available in the 1977-1978 time frame. Automatic blanket wash units for heatset web presses took longer to develop due to safety concerns. Some of the first units caused dryer explosions! One of the first commercially averrable units for heatset presses was first introduced in 1980-1981.
