Kevin: While we could spend hours on the topic of air pollution emissions from printing operations, here is a quick synopsis of emissions from those printing operations using evaporative ink drying techniques: Heatset Web Offset Lithography Inks - Ink oil (C12-C17 hydrocarbon blend) Coatings - Ink oil or iso- or n-propyl alcohol Fountain Solution - Isopropyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, glycol ethers (2-butoxy ethanol most common) Cleaning Solutions - Variety of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon blends such as mineral spirits or VM&P Naphtha, glycol ethers, some MEK, methanol, toluene, isopropyl alcohol. Control Devices - Oxidizers (Catalytic, Recuperative Thermal, Regenerative Thermal) and Cooler Condensers Flexographic - Solvent Based Inks - Blends of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, hexane, toluene, isopropyl acetate, n-propyl acetate, gylcols, and glycol ethers. Coatings - See Inks Cleaning Solvents - See Inks Control Devices - Oxidizers (Catalytic, Recuperative Thermal, Regenerative Thermal) and occasionally Carbon Adsorption. Packaging and Product Rotogravure - Solvent-Based Inks - Blends of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, hexane, toluene, isopropyl acetate, n-propyl acetate, gylcols, and glycol ethers. Coatings - See Inks Cleaning Solvents - See Inks Control Devices - Oxidizers (Catalytic, Recuperative Thermal, Regenerative Thermal) and occasionally Carbon Adsorption. Publication Rotogravure Inks - toluene Coatings - See Inks Cleaning Solvents - See Inks Control Devices - Carbon Adsorption. Screen Printing Inks - Blends of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenated solvents miscible with water such as n-hexane, n-heptane ethanol, methylcyclopentane, methyl pentanes cyclohexane, toluene, gylcols, and glycol ethers. Coatings - See Inks Cleaning Solvents - See Inks Control Devices - Oxidizers (Catalytic, Recuperative Thermal, Regenerative Thermal) I am only aware of one printer (a screen printing operation) that is using a biofiltration unit for control. They use solvent-based inks and the unit seems to be performing as expected. Please let me know if you need more information. Gary Jones
