My experience has been fountain solution does not filter well. I'll follow by saying that there are many water quality issues that could lead to problems on the press that filters may not handle: pH and conductivity just to name a couple. If you want to learn more, just ask a paper vendor and they will give you all the problems inks cause and then ask the ink vendor and they will tell you all the problems paper causes . As for dumping used fountain solution, many times it is ok but I have learned one thing the hard way. Be sure to ask what is done to control algae buildup in the fountain. I had a case where a commercial algaecide with hexavalent chromium was used by a printer. Needless to say the city frowns on such discharges. You might also find algaecides with copper sulfate which can be problematic although to a lesser extent. Be sure to check with city, state and federal regs in your area and I hope this helps.
