Article Summary: Minding Your Bindings
3.13.98

How much waste do you generate from defective bindings? This article reviews some conventional as well as not so conventional ideas for testing adhesive bindings that emphasize sound methodology rather than fancy equipment. The article reviews major types of bindings and appropriate applications for different types of bindings, followed by some spine preparation considerations. The bulk of the article addresses different testing techniques. The author emphasizes good record keeping and quality control procedures as part of the key to maintaining quality (and reducing waste.) Some of the more intriguing tests include the "subway test," the "peel test," and the "Maytag test." Of course, conventional testing procedures and equipment are also addressed.
