The production of “scratch-off” lottery tickets
requires printing methods that can withstand damage from exposure to
sunlight on an automobile dashboard to the ravages of washing and drying
cycles when left in pants or shirt pockets.
At the same time, governments demand that lottery tickets are
manufactured with security measures equivalent to those used in printing
currency. Oberthur Gaming
Technologies of Montreal has adopted and developed UV-curable coating
systems that have set the standard for security and durability in this
industry.
Oberthur experimented with UV coating in the early
1980’s with little success; however, the company returned to the
technology when it invested in two web presses that are equipped with
UV-lamp systems that allow Oberthur to produce high volumes of
consistently perfect lottery tickets in an efficient manner.
Oberthur is now enjoying the many benefits of UV printing,
including more vivid colors, rapid drying times and reduced clean-up.
Once Obethur set the standard, all of its competitors have
subsequently made the transition to UV curing.
