Article Summary: Closed Loop Color Control Results
2.16.00

Two printing plants have analyzed their waste rates after installing closed loop color control and have found substantial savings.

Quebecor World's Taunton, MA plant uses a closed loop system in conjunction with computer-to-plate prepress. The digital data are used to make the plate and preset the ink keys on the press. A fully automated color control system finds and scans the color bars, adjusts for print defects such as hickeys and scratches, and makes ink key adjustments. Target density is able to be maintained within a few degrees throughout the press run. This already efficient plant was able to further cut its makeready time by 7% and to reduce its sub-makeready waste by more than 10%.

Berlin Industries in Carol Stream IL, has had two presses with closed loop color control since 1996. The company has seen its waste rate fall from 9.3% to 8% after installing color control. Makeready impressions have likewise fallen from 4000-7000 to 2400-4000.
