| 10.28.99 As computer-to-plate (CTP) platesetters are incorporated into prepress
operations, printers can begin the digital workflow farther upstream. The printer described in this article gets its job orders in digital
form via a web site. Business forms, cards, stationery and other two color work are constructed by clients on the printer's web site. A PDF
file is created from which a GIF image is derived. The image is sent back to the client for viewing on their web browser. Upon client
approval, the PDF file is sent through a raster image processor, the CTP platesetter and onto a plate. Job scheduling is done and job progress
is available for tracking by the client via the web site. This is a computer-to-plate system with a twist. The computer is the client's.
This system uses a form of computer-based proofing in that the client signs off on the GIF image proof. Film and hardcopy proofing materials
and the associated waste is thus eliminated.
