Article Summary: Shaftless Presses Offer Flexibility and Control
4.9.99

If individual press units are driven with separate electric motors, unique control opportunities exists. Gone are the mechanical drive shaft and gears and the propagation of errors and adjustments in a connected system. Each electric motor can be controlled by a fiber optic link to a central controller. Each press unit can also be adjusted, plates changed, blankets washed, etc. when shut down or controlled independently of its companions.

Makeready wastes can be reduced by individually altering press units as required without as much interaction with other press operations. Wasted web lengths can also be reduced as individual adjustments are made, eliminating the need to run the web through the entire press.
