Several proofs of a printing job need to be made in order for the customers, designers,
and print operators to understand and agree upon the desired output. The more these proofs
can be made without film, paper and ink, the less waste there will be.
Digital workflows can eliminate the need for film in the prepress department. Secure and
fast file transfer can get an electronic file to a printer or customer quickly. Software
is becoming available by which a prepress department can output a proof from the design
software onto a remote display either at the printer or customer's office. Accurate color
management software can depict the image in the final printed version and all parties can
view the product quickly without producing and transporting hardcopies. The resultant
savings in materials and time can be impressive. Source: Graphic Arts Monthly
