Article Summary: Color Density Tracking and Control
6.17.99

A video-based color density measurement system integrated with computerized press controls can improve print quality, cut makeready time, reduce waste and speed production.

Two in-line video cameras can color bars on the edges of the web at full press speed. Data are oversampled to allow paper and printing imperfections such as dirt, holes, hickies and tick marks to be eliminated. These data are translated into a color density equivalent which is displayed on a computer monitoring the press. The press operator can be alerted to make adjustments in roller settings, ink and water levels, blanket packing, tension, etc. to bring the color to desired values.

Color target densities have been able to be reached at one litho printer described in the article in less than half the time and with 30-40% less waste than without the closed loop color density control system.
